There are some ingredients that seem to pop up everywhere you look in the food and beauty industries, and Polysorbate (specifically Polysorbate 80) is no exception. We often take these ingredients for granted, since they’re in some of our favorite food like ice cream, but why do they have to appear in our favorite products at all?

At Elan Naturals, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, actually natural CBD products. If it doesn’t serve a benefit to the customer then we don’t use it.

In the bath bombs industry, Polysorbate 80 is used very commonly to help hold the bomb shape together into firm, sturdy shapes and it is necessary for adding mica powder or artificial coloring to your bath bomb without accidentally staining your tub.

What is Polysorbate?

Polysorbate is a man-made compound that is often used as an emulsifier in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. It is used to help ingredients mix together and stay blended.

How is Polysorbate Made?

Polysorbate is made by combining sorbitol, a sugar alcohol, and ethylene oxide, a toxic gas. The resulting compound is a viscous liquid that can be used in a variety of manufactured products.

Why is Polysorbate Bad for Human Use?

Despite its widespread use, Polysorbate has been linked to a number of health concerns. One of the main concerns is that it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Polysorbate has also been linked to digestive problems, such as diarrhea and bloating. In addition, Polysorbate has been found to disrupt the gut microbiome, which can lead to a host of health problems.

Studies have shown that Polysorbate can cause tumors in laboratory animals. Even though it has not been scientifically proven to be a causation factor towards humans – we firmly believe that evidence in lab rats is enough for us.

Safe Alternatives to Polysorbate

Some examples of these natural emulsifiers include:

Sunflower Lecithin

This is a natural emulsifier that is derived from sunflowers. It is a popular choice for CBD products because it is effective at creating stable emulsions and is easy to work with. Sunflower lecithin is also rich in phospholipids which help with retaining moisture.

Beeswax

Beeswax is a natural emulsifier that is frequently utilized in skincare products. It is effective in creating stable emulsions and forming a protective layer on the skin. Moreover, beeswax is abundant in vitamin A, which can contribute to the promotion of healthy skin. We’re proud to only use local-to-Colorado Beeswax in our CBD Lip Balms.

Gum Arabic

A natural emulsifier that is derived from the sap of the acacia tree. It is commonly used in the food industry as a stabilizer and thickener.

Xanthan gum

Xanthan gum is a polysaccharide, a type of sugar that is made from a bacteria called Xanthomonas campestris. Xanthan Gum is commonly used in the food industry as a thickener and stabilizer. If you have never tried it before, a little bit of Xanthan Gum will turn your protein shake into a creamy thick ice cream agent instead.

Vegetable glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a natural emulsifier that is derived from vegetable oils. It is commonly used in skincare products because it helps to moisturize and hydrate the skin.

Why Elan Naturals Does Not Use Polysorbate in Our Products

At Elan Naturals, it is really important to us that we keep natural products natural. If an emulsifier is necessary for our products, like out lip balm and pain sticks,, then we don’t cut any corners. We will always opt for a high quality, all natural solution instead of a quick, cheap alternative.

Our rose and sinus bath salts are white in color for this same reason too; While a nicely colored bath is aesthetically pleasing, it would mean every customer would need to expose their entire body to polysorbate 80 for no additional therapeutic benefit. For our Rose bath bombs, we include a naturally derived, water-soluble rosehip powder that turns the water into a safe, soothing pink color while providing a boost in polyphenols and anthocyanins that your skin will love.

At Elan Naturals, we believe that our customers deserve the best. That’s why we use only the highest quality, actually natural CBD in our products – and that excludes a list of ingredients we would never include in our lab.

We believe that Polysorbate is not a suitable ingredient for human consumption, and we choose to exclude it from our products.We understand that some companies use Polysorbate as an emulsifier in their CBD products, but we believe that there are better, safer alternatives.
